St Andrews dominates US top 100 courses abroad
(09 July 2009) (Group)Four St Andrews Links courses and Kingsbarns Golf Links have been named in the prestigious Golf Digest 100 Best Courses list, prompting the magazine to name the famous Home of Golf as the world’s pre-eminent golfing destination.
As one of America’s leading golf publications, Golf Digest compiles a biannual ranking of the top 100 courses outside the US, using its team of over 900 golf course panellists, including editors of its 23 worldwide editions and a range of golf experts.
After only four months in operation, The Castle Course was rated at 65, two places behind the New Course. The Jubilee also made an appearance at 92, while the Old Course sits proudly in second position, losing out to Royal County Down for the top spot, a course originally laid out by the famous Tom Morris.
Alan McGregor, Chief Executive of St Andrews Links Trust, said: “It is a wonderful achievement to have courses recognised in such a definitive ranking. For The Castle Course to be included so soon after opening is remarkable. It is also pleasing to see some well deserved recognition for the Jubilee Course. This is no mean feat when you see the calibre of the courses from around the world included in the ranking.
“A great deal of hard work goes in to maintaining the courses at St Andrews Links to ensure they are in top condition. Recognition such as this from one of the world’s leading golf publications is something which St Andrews and Scotland as a whole should be proud of.”
In addition to the four Links courses, Kingsbarns on the outskirts of St Andrews was voted in at number eighteen - that’s more Top 100 golf courses in one area than anywhere else in the world.
Donna Clark, Reservations Manager, Kingsbarns Golf Links concluded: “We are absolutely delighted that Kingsbarns Golf Links has been ranked in the Top 20 best course in the world. Since opening in 2000 the course has established itself as a links of high regard with its winning combination of playability, dramatic seaside location with inspiring views of the North Sea and classic links turf and we look forward to welcoming more visitors along to experience the course.”
