How To Book The Old Course
____________________________________________
Most golfers would like to play The Old Course at St Andrews at least once in their lifetime.
The popularity of golf’s oldest course is unsurprisingly huge, sustaining nearly 45,000 rounds a year. As a result of this high demand, special conditions apply to bookings.
Golfers should have a handicap of 24 for men and 36 for ladies and must have a valid certificate or card. Please bear in mind that The Old Course is closed Sundays.
Easier Than You Think
The Old Course has a reputation for being a difficult course to get on to because of its immense popularity. In reality, any golfer visiting St Andrews for a few days has a very strong chance of gaining a tee time through the daily ballot.
Ballot
Around 50 per cent of all starting times over the year are put into the daily ballot (lottery) which is drawn every day for the next day's play. The Saturday draw is for play on the following Monday.
Chances vary according to the time of year, how busy the course is and the weather. A minimum of two golfers can enter by telephone on 01334 466666, or in person before 2pm on the day before play. Names, home clubs and handicaps are required. The results are shown by 4pm at the following link, and at various locations at St Andrews Links Trust.
Single golfers
The most common way for a single to get on the Old Course is by going to the starter as early as possible in the morning. The starter will try to join the golfer with the first available two or three ball.
